Blackout vs. room darkening shades: which do you need?

Lake house bedroom with a dark blackout roller shade

“Blackout” and “room darkening” get used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t, and the difference matters most in the rooms where you sleep.

What blackout shades do

A blackout fabric is fully opaque. No light passes through the material itself, so when the shade is down, the room behind it goes dark. That’s why blackout is the usual choice for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and anyone who works nights.

What room darkening shades do

Room darkening is usually a light filtering fabric with a liner. It cuts most of the light and dims the room, but it doesn’t make it dark. You’ll still see a soft glow through the fabric, which suits living rooms, kitchens, and home offices.

Which one is right for your room?

  • Bedrooms and nurseries: blackout, especially if anyone sleeps past sunrise or naps during the day.
  • Media rooms: blackout, so the screen isn’t fighting the sun.
  • Living rooms and kitchens: room darkening or light filtering, so the room stays bright and comfortable.
  • Home offices: room darkening to cut glare on a monitor without losing daylight.

Why light still gets in around the edges

Even a fully opaque fabric can leave a thin line of light at the sides. With an inside mount, the shade has to clear the window frame, so a small gap is unavoidable. For the darkest room, choose an outside mount that overlaps the window by 2 to 3 inches on each side, or add a cassette to seal the top.

Ready for a darker bedroom?

The short answer

If someone sleeps behind the shade while it’s light out, choose blackout. If you want to soften the light and keep the room usable, room darkening or light filtering is the better fit. Not sure? Order free samples and hold them up to your window.
