Why blackout

Real darkness, for the rooms where it matters most

Our blackout fabrics are fully opaque, so no light passes through the material itself. Paired with an outside mount or a cassette, they turn a sunlit bedroom into a place you can actually sleep in.

    Sleep in, every day

Block streetlights, early sun, and the neighbor’s porch light. Go motorized for a clean, cord-free look beside the bed.

  • Bright room with a linen-look blackout roller shade

    Nurseries

    Nap time, any time

A dark room at 2 p.m. is the whole trick. Motorized shades have no cords or chains to reach, safe by design.

  • Cabin great room with blackout shades on tall windows around a stone fireplace

    Media rooms & offices

    Glare-free screens

Kill the glare on a TV or monitor without closing off the room. Pair with motorization for one-touch movie mode.

Know the difference

Blackout vs. room darkening

The terms get used interchangeably online, and they shouldn’t be. “Room darkening” fabrics dim a room; true blackout fabrics stop light at the material. Which one you need depends on who’s sleeping behind it.

Good questions

Blackout shade FAQ

The questions we hear most on the phone and in the showroom. Don’t see yours? Call (330) 674-2590 and ask the person who’ll build your shade.

Ask a question

With an inside mount, a small gap along each side is unavoidable because the shade has to clear the frame. For true blackout we recommend an outside mount that overlaps the window by 2 to 3 inches per side, or a cassette to seal the top.

Choose motorized: with no cords or chains within reach, it’s the safest choice for nurseries and kids’ rooms.

If someone sleeps behind the shade while it’s light out (a baby, a shift worker, or anyone who wants to sleep past sunrise), choose blackout. Room darkening dims a room but still lets a soft glow through the fabric, which suits living rooms and offices.

Yes. Motorization is available on shades 19 inches wide and up, and one remote controls up to 15 shades.
